As the founder of SiSaf, a global research and bio-pharmaceutical company, Dr. Suzanne Saffie-Siebert, Ph.D. has a soft spot for skin care.
She knows that great skin can build self-esteem and confidence, and after seeing a need for solutions that actually work, Dr. Saffie-Siebert decided to found a skincare company that’s based on science: Good Science Beauty. She now actively uses her research on drug delivery as the foundation for the skincare line. With this research, she and her team developed Good Silicon+™, an inorganic-organic hybrid technology that safely and effectively carries proven ingredients through the outer-skin barrier, to the target site. There, it combats damaging conditions, and helps improve skin.
In the second part of our Q&A with Dr. Saffie-Siebert, we talked about how she discovered the benefits of using advanced drug delivery research to solve everyday skin problems.
Why did you choose to found Good Science Beauty and SiSaf? Why not one or the other?
That’s a great question. Our business plan is based on our two companies complementing each other: Good Science Beauty, our skincare line, uses findings gathered from SiSaf, our biotech company that focuses on the development of prescription medicines for skin conditions, such as psoriasis. Both companies use a similar delivery technology. But as you know, it can take ages for pharmaceutical products to get to market. At Good Science Beauty, I can create scientifically advanced skin care products that can be made available to the public in a shorter time period.
Nobody in my team comes from a classical cosmetics background, but all of them have Ph.D.’s and are eager to use their scientific expertise to develop products that work.
The primary link between SiSaf and Good Science Beauty products appears to be Silicon. Can you talk about the role it plays in skin care and pharmaceuticals?
At SiSaf, we developed and patented a unique drug delivery system that’s based on porous elemental silicon. Its structure is similar to a honeycomb, and we wrap it in lipids and amino acids. We fill the “honeycomb” with ingredients that are good for the skin. As the silicon naturally breaks down, it releases the ingredients over time. It also releases the silicon itself, an essential micronutrient mineral that’s connected with collagen synthesis, and promotes the health of your skin, hair, and nails.
We use a similar delivery technology for chronic or life-threatening diseases, which sets us apart from a typical beauty brand. We constantly improve our formulas, just like a tech company. In the cosmetics industry, companies will often create new products where only the branding is innovative and most life science companies commit to one innovation, but this isn’t the case for SiSaf and Good Science Beauty. We plan to follow Apple’s lead and will regularly introduce significant technical innovation. Science and technology won't stop moving forward, so our products won’t either. We listen and we learn from each other, other scientists, and our customers every day to develop cutting-edge products.
How have early users responded to Good Science Beauty?
Initial trials of our skin purifier, 001-Pu, showed a rapid reduction of blemishes without the dryness associated with traditional spot treatments. These initial trials made me realize just how much skin condition affects self-esteem. Good skin is really important and our team doesn’t underestimate the emotional toll that comes from bad skin.
