Here at Good Science Beauty, our skincare products are grounded in proven science. It all starts with Good Silicon+ ™ and the ingredient combinations it protects, carries and releases over time. This is the fourth in a series of blog posts that takes an in-depth look at our ingredients, how they work, and why we use them in our products.
Glutathione and melatonin (yes, the sleep aid) make a powerful skin brightening duo in our Skin Brightening Cream (004-Br). These two ingredients have remarkable antioxidant properties that, when combined, boost each others’ effects to even skin tone and protect your skin’s natural renewal process from harmful environmental factors.
This combination is your one-stop shop for brightening and evening out your skin tone. Most of the time, an unbalanced skin tone can be chalked up to hyperpigmentation, or uneven darkening of the skin. Hyperpigmentation is caused by an overproduction of melanin, or pigment. It gives your skin its color and is the first line of defense against harmful UV rays. A variety of factors such as sun exposure, genetics, age, hormones, and skin injuries (like a cut or scrape that becomes a scar) can trigger an overproduction of melanin. Glutathione and melatonin work so well together because they both prevent overproduction of melanin, and essentially stop the skin from developing too much pigment.
Glutathione is often thought of as lightning in a bottle. It’s a powerful antioxidant that blocks pigment formation by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme that helps produce melanin. In some parts of the world, glutathione is injected into the skin as a lightening agent, but that is widely considered off-label use. Instead, we make glutathione effective topically with Good Silicon+™, our patented carrier technology that delivers ingredients deep below the skin’s surface, without an injection.
We combined glutathione with melatonin, a natural hormone that protects cells from the effects of free radicals. Besides its relaxing, snooze-inducing qualities, melatonin also serves as an antioxidant that blocks receptors that produce melanin, and therefore pigment.
Like any great team, glutathione and melatonin support each other — incorporating melatonin into your skincare routine actually increases your levels of glutathione. They prohibit melanin overproduction on their own, so when they’re combined, they have even more brightening power.
We use science to draw the best qualities out of proven ingredients and deliver them straight to where your skin needs them most. Together, the illuminating and protective powers of glutathione and melatonin brighten and even your skin tone from within.
Nurture your skin with the brightening properties of glutathione and melatonin in our Skin Brightening Cream (004-Br). Curious about the ingredients in other Good Science Beauty products? Stay tuned for more information in our About Face series.
